Lithium battery fire is often accompanied by serious accidents, whether it is sea transport or inland road transport. At about 11:42 on August 20, an intercity bus 

from Lai 'an County in Anhui province to Nanjing Forest Farm station caught fire while traveling. Two passengers died and five others were scalded. 

After a preliminary investigation, the cause of the fire was spontaneous combustion of a lithium battery battery carried by a passenger.

The Ministry of Emergency Management issued a document pointing out that lithium batteries mainly rely on lithium ions to move between 

the positive and negative electrodes to achieve the charge and discharge process, from the principle point of view, 

the most important factors causing the explosion of lithium batteries are two as below:

1. Overcharging. Because the battery has resistance, the battery will store a lot of heat during the charging process. 

     The protection device in the lithium battery can provide a certain degree of protection against overcharge by detecting the voltage. 

      However, when the overcharge time is too long and the voltage continues to be too high, the dendrite short circuit inside the lithium-ion battery is prone to occur, 

      resulting in the rising temperature and pressure of the lithium battery, resulting in the risk of explosion and fire. Therefore, it is not recommended to overcharge 

      lithium-containing battery products during land or sea transportation, increasing the possibility of accidents.

2. Short circuit. When using lithium batteries, if the battery temperature is too high due to external factors, it is easy to cause damage to the battery diaphragm, 

      resulting in short circuit, resulting in excessive internal heat accumulation.

Treatment measures:

1. When the lithium battery catches fire, the dry powder fire extinguisher can only extinguish the surrounding flame, and can not effectively prevent the 

     lithium battery from losing control of heat, and at this time the internal temperature of the lithium battery is still very high, the internal chemical reaction continues, 

     after the heat accumulation, it is easy to reignite, and even explode. Therefore, the disposal of water or water-based fire extinguishers is the first choice to deal with lithium battery fire.

2. If the lithium battery with AC power is on fire, be sure to unplug the power before watering.

Summary of experience and suggestions:

1. Be sure to purchase qualified battery products and tools through regular channels

2. Lithium battery products and tools should be stored separately as far as possible when they are not in use

3. Lithium batteries should be avoided in humid, high-temperature locations, and as far away from flammable materials as possible

4. After the lithium battery is fully charged, it is necessary to disconnect the power supply in time, and do not charge continuously for a long time

In the daily use of lithium batteries, be careful not to squeeze and smash, so as to avoid the risk of explosion
