Specification and requirements for lithium battery labeling

2023-04-17

From March of this year, Chinese customs has conducted stricter inspections on the export of dangerous goods than ever before, cracking down on the concealment and omission of dangerous goods, and regulating the labeling of dangerous goods.

In our daily export of dangerous goods, the export of nine types of dangerous goods is increasing, such as lithium batteries, lithium battery equipment, balance vehicles, and electric vehicles.

We share some requirements and specifications for labeling nine types of lithium batteries here:

Requirements for hazard labels affixed to the transportation packaging of goods:

A. The following two labels need to be affixed to the goods, and we will distinguish them into a and b

(a):                                                    (b):

B.

Size requirements for (a) label:

A square (diamond) with a 45 degree angle. The minimum size is 100mm x 100mm. There should be a line inside the diamond edge that is parallel to the label edge, and the distance between the outer edge of the line and the label edge is approximately 5 millimeters.

(b) Label size requirements:

Should be rectangular or square, with hatches on the edges. The minimum size is 100mm wide x 100mm high, and the width of the hatch is at least 5mm. The symbol (a set of batteries, one that has been damaged or ignited, placed above the UN number of the lithium-ion or lithium-metal battery pack or battery) is black with a white background or an appropriate contrasting background. The hatching is red. If the size of the packaging requires it, the size can be reduced, but it should not be less than 100mm wide x 70mm high.

C. Exemption from labeling (a):

1. Lithium batteries and lithium battery packs exempted through SP188

2. The button cell and less than four batteries and two battery packs on the circuit board exempted by SP188 (f)

3. Vehicles powered by UN3171 lithium batteries

4. Lithium batteries and lithium battery packs in UN3536 energy storage cabinet

D. Exemption from labeling (b):

1. Lithium batteries and lithium battery packs without any exemptions

2. The button cell and less than four batteries and two battery packs on the circuit board exempted by SP188 (f)

3. Vehicles powered by UN3171 lithium batteries

4. Lithium batteries and lithium battery packs in UN3536 energy storage cabinet

Requirements for hazard labels affixed to containers:

The following hazard labels should be affixed to the container, we will distinguish them into c and d

(c)                                                                        (d)

Their standard size:

Label (c): A square (diamond) with a 45 degree angle. The minimum size is 250mm x 250mm (from the edge of the label). The line on the inner side of the edge is a parallel line, and the distance between the outer edge of the line and the edge of the sign is 12.5 millimeters. The color of the symbol and the line on the inner side of the edge should be the same as the label color of the type or item of dangerous goods to be transported.

The symbol/number, position, and size of the type or item should be proportional to the corresponding type or item of dangerous goods to be transported as specified in 5.2.2.2. The label should display the type or item number of the dangerous goods to be transported (i.e. compatible group letters for Class 1 goods), and the display method should comply with the provisions of 5.2.2.2 for the corresponding label, with the height of the number not less than 25 millimeters.

Label (d): A black number designation of no less than 65 millimeters, written on an orange rectangular panel with a height of 120 millimeters, a width of 300 millimeters, and a 10 millimeter wide black edge
